DALTON, Ga. -- A Dalton police offer was in the right place at the right time to save a choking baby on Monday.

According to the Dalton Police Department, Officer Michael Houck was responding to a minor car crash on Foster Street when a neighbor ran up to the crash scene and began speaking to the Houck in Spanish. A driver involved in the crash translated and told the officer that a baby was choking. Houck ran to the home where a mother was in the front yard with a 7-month-old baby in her arms. She gave the baby, who wasn't breathing, to Houck, who began to apply back thrusts to the child. The baby coughed up a small piece of a carrot and began to cry and gasp for air.

The baby's mother told Houck that the child had pulled a sheet of jalapeno peppers onto himself and the peppers had caused his irritation and swelling. Houck and the child's mother flushed the baby's skin with water as emergency medical personnel arrived. The EMS crew determined that the child was OK.
