DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A DeKalb County police officer remained hospitalized Friday, a day after being shot twice by a suspect already in custody. That suspect was then shot and killed by another officer, police said.

According to Mekka Parish of the DeKalb County Police Department, the shooting took place Thursday night at 3630 Camp Circle, outside of Magistrate Court.

According to DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander, Detectives Phillip Christy and Eddie Stubbs were transporting two inmates to jail after a court appearance on drug and armed robbery charges. One of the inmates, identified as 19-year-old Miguel Benton, managed to get an officer's gun and shot Christy twice. Stubbs then shot Benton, killing him.

Christy, a 25-year veteran, was shot in the femur and the wrist, and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He underwent surgery and was in stable condition Friday, according to Alexander.

The second inmate was not involved in the incident, Alexander said.

How Benton managed to get the gun, and how he was handcuffed, is under investigation

According to police records, Benton had a lengthy criminal history. He was arrested in late September for armed robbery. A week later, he was arrested again for allegedly robbing four people at gunpoint.
