DeKalb Police Chief James Conroy announces retirement

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The chief of the DeKalb County Police Department has announced his retirement after 30 years with the department.

Chief James Conroy's announcement came in a statement from DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond on Wednesday where he detailed the chief's career in law enforcement and commended him on his accomplishments.

"Chief Conroy is an example of the best DeKalb County has to offer," Thurmond said. "His selfless dedication to public service and commitment to honesty, integrity and professionalism has set an example for all DeKalb employees.

According to the release, Conroy grew up in DeKalb County and worked in several divisions of the department during his three decades with the police department. Those included the criminal investigation and uniform divisions as well as the homicide and assault unit.

He also held the position of commander of the north precinct, special victims section, information services division and assistant chief of the support services division.

Conroy accepted the position of chief in 2013 and focuses on crime reduction and transparency according to the official statement.  The latter was further improved by the introduction of body cameras and transition to use of the National Incident-Based Reporting System.

He has also led the department through its most recent tragedy - the death of Officer Edgar Isidro Flores. Flores was shot and killed after conducting a traffic stop off of Candler Road.

Authorities said the search is now underway for his replacement. Conroy's final day is April 30.
