MONROE COUNTY, Ga. -- One of the two Monroe County deputies injured in a shooting Saturday will be taken off of life support Monday, according to the Monroe County Coroner.

The shooting happened at around 5:45 p.m. at 111 Haley Lane in Bolingbroke, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

District attorney Richard Milam said 46-year-old Christopher Keith Calmer had a pistol and was threatening suicide. When deputies Michael Norris and Jeff Wilson responded to the 911 call, Calmer allegedly shot at them as they approached the door.

After Calmer and the officers exchanged gunfire, Milam said Calmer was shot in the leg.

The officers were rushed to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Monroe County Chairman Mike Bilderback said Deputy Norris was shot in the head, while Deputy Wilson was shot in the abdomen and leg. He says Wilson is alert and expected to recover.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Monroe County Coroner Joey Proctor, Jr. pronounced 24-year-old Deputy Norris "brain dead."

Proctor said the deputy will be kept on life support until Monday because Norris is an organ donor. Norris' body will be sent to the GBI for an autopsy after his organs are donated.

Norris's family has asked that the following update be released regarding his condition:

Deputy Norris sustained injuries in the line of duty yesterday, Sept. 13, 2014, that were not survivable and has been determined brain dead today, Sept. 14, 2014. In keeping with his career of service, he is an organ donor. While matching organ donor recipients are sought, Deputy Norris has been placed on life support at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Deputy Norris began his career with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office approximately two years ago as a jail officer. He served as a school resource officer at K.B. Sutton Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year and transferred to the Patrol Division in June. Deputy Norris is a dedicated law enforcement officer whose career, while brief, is outstanding.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office appreciates the outpouring of support during this difficult time. It is our hope that Deputy Norris's last act of true service -- organ donation -- will prevent another family from suffering a similar loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Norris's wife, parents and other family members.

Calmer lived at the home on Haley Lane with elderly family members, Milam said. He survived the shooting and is being charged with murder, attempted murder, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and five counts of aggravated assault.

A neighbor who heard the shots on Saturday night told WMAZ's Sophia Danner-Okotie that he knew the suspect's family.

"You never see these people. They're always quiet; they stay to themselves," Don McKinney said.

He says he knew three people lived at the home, an elderly couple and their mother. He found out for the first time Calmer, the couple's son, was also living there.

He described the shooting scene.

"It was like, 'Bang, bang, bang.' It sounded like it was in the neighborhood of 10 shots," McKinney said. "It struck me as like a seventh sense of, 'Something's not right,'" McKinney said.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigations are still investigating the incident.
