ATLANTA β The famous CNN sign on Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park Drive has been removed.
The news giant told 11Alive it was taken down Monday. 11Alive reported back in 2020 that the 24-hour news company's headquarters would be moving from its longtime location downtown. They've been making the transition to relocate to the Techwood Turner Broadcasting campus in Midtown; the company planned to be out of the old building by the end of 2023.
11Alive has confirmed that all of the Atlanta-based CNN staff has been relocated.
The iconic CNN sign that Atlantans and tourists were used to seeing downtown will be installed at the Techwood location at a later date.
The company said over the next few weeks, the sign will undergo refurbishment.
CNN went on the air in 1980. The news network was the brainchild of Ted Turner. It of course had its growing pains when it first launched in Midtown. Years later, the network moved to the CNN Center in downtown.
The sign that's widely known loudly signaled the company's downtown location. It will be missed by many who are so accustomed to seeing it there.
People went to social media to talk about the change and their memories from years past.
