ATLANTA -- With just two weeks to go until New Year's Eve, Atlanta's mayor says the city's traditional Peach Drop will happen on schedule.

The New Year's Eve tradition at Underground Atlanta has been in question since the property was sold to WRS Inc. Real Estate Investments out of South Carolina. The sale won't go through until after New Year's Eve, so the property remains in the hands of the city of Atlanta.

"We are going to have a Peach Drop in Atlanta," Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed told 11Alive's Donna Lowry. "We've heard folks loud and clear. So, when we indicated that weren't going to have a Peach Drop, the public made it well-known that they were not happy with that conclusion."

Reed said he didn't have any specifics about the New Year's Eve event, but said it will be held at Underground Atlanta. "I don't have any details at all because we're in the process of producing it. But, we've had the Peach Drop for 27 years. We have one of the four largest New Year's celebrations in the United States, a fact that I learned when I said that we simply would not have the Peach Drop," Reed said.

George Chidi, a DeKalb County resident, said he's glad the tradition is back on for this year, but wonders about the end of 2016.  "I think we need the Peach Drop. I mean, this is Atlanta. People come to Atlanta to go see the Peach Drop.  The key question is what happens next year. We need a plan now for 2016," he said.
