Police: Mystery woman who went on date with I-20 shooting victim comes forward

ATLANTA -- Police say they've found the mystery woman who went on a date with a 33-year-old before he was shot and killed in his car on I-20.

Police announced the woman, who they still haven't identified, came to Atlanta Police headquarters Thursday and voluntarily met with investigators. Police said she's cooperating fully with police, and they have no new information to release.

It was around 12:25 a.m. on Aug. 3 when police said Rodrigo Castillo was shot on I-20 and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Mableton. Castillo was the only person found inside the vehicle. But earlier that night, he was on a date with that unidentified woman.

Police said Castillo and the woman he met on a dating app went to two restaurants in downtown Decatur. They have now delivered search warrants to several dating apps to get access to his history.

"They went to Leon’s Full Service restaurant and bar and they went to Kimball House restaurant afterwards. So anyone in the Decatur area that may have seen them approximately between 8 p.m. and midnight...it would really help us if they called us and told us anything that they noticed and anything that they saw,” Atlanta Police Lt. Andrea Webster said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Police said the woman, who may be Colombian, may also be a graduate student at Emory or Georgia State University.

Webster said there are many unanswered questions such as why he was stopped in the middle of I-20 and what happened before he was shot.

Lt. Webster also released new details. She said Castillo was driving a 2009 silver Volkswagen Jetta and that two shell casings from a 9mm weapon.

Officers said they do not believe the mystery woman is involved in the homicide but they wanted to speak with her. Now that she has reached out to police, they are hopeful she could help shape a timeline of what happened.

Castillo was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died. (Story continues below gallery)

Friends of Castillo recalled him as someone who lived life to the fullest.

"It’s nearly impossible to think of Rodrigo in the past tense because he loved life so strongly," said Terri Fabian. "He was an adventure seeker and an avid CrossFitter with a huge heart. He was dedicated to his friendships, loyal to a fault and funny. He will be missed like crazy."

"Rodrigo was the kind of person you immediately warm up to," said Camila Rivera. "Despite being built like a wrestler, quick-witted, and intelligent, he always exuded a lovable boyshness about him. He didn't have to have known you well to make you feel like a valued friend.

"He was absolutely incredible and I cannot wrap my mind around the fact I'll never see his childlike grin again."

Friends are planning to hold a candlelight vigil for Castillo Friday at Caffeinated CrossFit, described as a second home for Castillo. A Gofundme campaign has also been launched to support his family.
