ATLANTA – Some Atlanta demonstrators protesting the grand jury's decision in Ferguson, Mo. put their energy into helping some of the city's homeless on Friday.

Protest organizer Lakeysha Hallmon organized the day of service, enlisting her friends to pass out food and blankets to the homeless population. Hallmon said she believes it's a better way to honor Michael Brown's life than some of the violent protests the erupted after the grand jury chose not to indict the police officer involved in Brown's death.

"We just want to honor human life – that all lives matter," Hallmon said. "I think if we can start looking at people as individuals, and see that yes, you matter and I matter, then we can have better response."

Hallmon said she understands people's anger, but she believes that outrage and energy needs to be channeled into improving the community.

"A lot of times people are angry and they respond in anger, and if you don't have a model in front of you, with what to do with this rage and what to do with this anger, then you go and you tear down buildings and you loot and you burn," Hallmon said.

The group handed out about 100 lunches as well as blankets and bottled water.
