ATLANTA — A person is dead after a brief police chase in Cobb County early Monday morning, according to authorities.
A Cobb County Police officer initiated a traffic stop around 12:17 a.m. after noticing a BMW driver speeding on Ernest Barret Parkway. The driver then immediately drove away.
Authorities said in a news release that the officer discontinued the chase “out of safety concerns.”
Cobb County Police said that the chase ended when the suspect’s car crashed near Frey Road and Abington Walk.
The driver of the BMW, while escaping the traffic stop on Frey Road, tried to negotiate a left curve in the roadway and failed to stay in their lane, exiting the eastern shoulder. According to police, the suspect’s car crashed into a concrete subdivision sign and became airborne.
Authorities added that the BMW then hit multiple trees before coming to a stop in the woods.
Police found the crashed car in the woods and found that the driver died on impact and a passenger was hurt. Police said that the passenger was taken to the hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.”
Police did not identify the driver.
