DUNWOODY, Ga. — A Dunwoody High student has died following a medical emergency while at school on Monday, according to the school's principal.
DeKalb County Fire said crews responded to the school, where they found a 15-year-old student -- since identified as Mia Dieguez -- in cardiac arrest. In a tragic update from the school's principal, Tom Bass said the student passed away.
"The incident occurred as many students were testing. After the medical emergency, the school was put on lockdown to limit movement within the building," the principal wrote in a letter to families. "We will not disclose additional information about the circumstances surrounding this student's passing out of respect for the family's privacy."
Bass said starting Tuesday morning, students will be able to meet with the school district's crisis team members for grief counseling.
"Everyone reacts to death differently. Our priority is respecting each other's feelings and emotions. As a family, we encourage you to talk with your child about this incident to help them share their thoughts and reactions," Bass added in the letter.
For those who need additional assistance from the school's administrative or counseling team, call (678) 874-8502.
"Our deepest sympathies remain with the student's loved ones during this challenging period," Bass concluded.
