DUNWOODY, Ga. -- Two busts in two weeks are shedding new light on the problem of child sex trafficking in the suburbs.
In Brookhaven, James Clay Webb, 51, was arrested Monday and charged with human sex trafficking, interfering with child custody and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Brookhaven Police would not release details but said Webb's arrest stemmed from a complaint from Bartow County DFCS about the possible sexual exploitation of a juvenile..
In Dunwoody, a police sting on June 25 led to the rescue of a 16-year-old victim of child sex trafficking.
Officers called the 24-hour hotline for the nonprofit group Georgia Cares, and they responded immediately.
"We made sure she had access to medical care and services," said Heather Stockdale, executive director of Georgia Cares. "We're working to get her services and supports to help her become safe and be healthy and lead a normal teenage life."
As part of the sting, Dunwoody Police arrested 9 people for prostitution and three for pimping: Shaquenta Bell, Damon Hanchell and Kasey Noel.
Police said the group advertised online and targeted the Perimeter area. Stockdale said child sex trafficking isn't just an inner city problem.
"Men and women are buying children for sex all across this state," Stockdale said.
Georgia Cares works with girls 18 and under and receives an average of one new victim referral a day.
Fifty percent of referrals come from Fulton and DeKalb Counties, while 25 percent come from the other counties that make up metro Atlanta. The rest come from far North Georgia and Middle and South Georgia, Stockdale said.
The average age of referrals to Georgia Cares is 14.
