COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Crews are investigating what led to a home catching fire early Sunday morning amid freezing temperatures in Cobb County.
This happened on Dawson Drive in Powder Spring.
According to a post from Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services, those living in the home said they were awoken by the smoke alarm. When they opened the door to the garage, there was heavy smoke and high heat.
Thankfully, officials said both occupants were able to escape without any injuries.
Unfortunately, firefighters said, "Heavy ice from the water used to fight the fire is making moving around the structure hazardous." A few firefighters could even seen slipping on the ice while trying to battle the blaze.
In the meantime, the Cobb Department of Transportation will spread sand across the road near the home where ice is accumulating.
Other departments were even called to help, including the Department of Public Safety, which assisted with a mobile command unit. That command unit is normally only used for SWAT situations, but during the fire, it was used as a warming center for first responders.
“We have to be very careful and do methodical movements to move our lines with strategic thought in that process,” said Chris Smith with Cobb County Fire, noting the particular level of care firefighters had to apply while working under such conditions.
The blaze started in the garage, and now it's clear the home is a total loss with just the facade remaining.
Sadly, the family dog died in the fire.
