BUFORD, Ga. — An earthquake was reported near Lake Lanier on Thursday night, according to the United States Geological Survey.
Residents in the Buford, Suwanee and Lake Lanier areas reported feeling an earthquake around 11:15 p.m. Thursday, with one person, Alicia Phillips, saying the quake shook her entire home near Buford Dam.
Another resident, Lyss Hawn, reported that her home also felt the rumble down in south Forsyth County.
Reports from USGS said the 2.5-magnitude earthquake had a 2.5-mile depth, which would only cause very light damage. However, it was considered to have a moderate intensity for shaking and may have been felt.
A seismograph with the Georgia Tech Educational earthQuake Network picked up on the earthquake from Grant Park in Atlanta.
At 1:30 a.m., another earthquake occurred near the original spot with a magnitude of 2.1. The depth of the second earthquake was 5.3-miles. The second quake was rated as having a level 4 intensity, which means you may have felt a light amount of shaking. No damage would've been caused by an earthquake this weak.
