Blown transformer caused East Coweta High power outage, canceling class for the day

It happened around 7 a.m., school officials said, leaving them little time to see if the power could be restored.

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — A power outage that canceled the school day at East Coweta High School on Wednesday was caused by a blown transformer, officials said.

According to Coweta County Schools Superintendent Dr. Evan Horton, the power outage happened around 7 a.m. -- leaving officials little time to determine if power could quickly be restored or whether they would need to cancel for the day.

Ultimately they decided they could not risk bringing the school's 3,100 students to a school with no power or heat.

The school posted in a Facebook message: "URGENT Parents - Due to the power outage currently at ECHS, school will be closed for Wednesday January 17th. We will keep everyone updated. We apologize for the late notice."

There was no clear indication whether or not the cold weather impacting the region had any influence in the transformer blowing out.
