EAST POINT, Ga. -- A slain police detective's hometown is gathering in support of him Monday night.
Terence Avery Green grew up in East Point, and the 6 p.m. vigil is planned at his parents' home at 3707 Calmer Circle. The vigil is organized by former state representative Joe Heckstall. Several other local leaders plan to attend.
The veteran police detective was killed in an ambush-style shooting last week while responding to a call of shots fired in a subdivision in Fulton County. Green had been on the force 22 years.
Amanuel Menghesha was arrested and charged with murder. In an exclusive interview, Menghesha's family told 11Alive's Rebecca Lindstrom Green was generous and caring. He checked up on Menghesha and his 15-year-old daughter on a regular basis. His brothers say they don't recognize the drunk and violent man described in the police reports. Menghesha was shot multiple times after killing Green and hitting another officer. He remains at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Green's funeral is planned for 1 p.m. Friday, Mar. 13 at World Changers Church in south Fulton County.
