Crews repairing water main breaks across Atlanta, officials say

The Atlanta Watershed Management Department responded to at least three water main breaks throughout the city on Sunday.

ATLANTA — Crews responded to multiple water main breaks across Atlanta this Sunday.

One of these emergency repairs happened to be in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood.

According to the City of Atlanta's Department of Watershed Management (DWM), crews performed emergency repairs near 604 Cooledge Ave. NE. They turned off an 8-inch main around that address earlier Sunday and there was an outage that affected 35 homes and two hydrants.

Rosemary Sampson was one of the Cooledge Ave residents who prepared to be without water for some time. Her service was interrupted for several hours after a water main line ruptured.

"I live up on the hill, so I saw it coming out and going all over the place," she said.

Water service has since been restored, but crews remained busy working to investigate and fix several other water main breaks across the city.

One was near 149 Arcadia Circle NW, part of the Hunter Hills neighborhood. Resident Jennifer Williams said water continued to spew for hours.

"We've been watching this all day, and it seems to be just gushing out of the pavement," Williams said.

The other main break was near 1055 Woodland Ave SE, part of the Ormewood Park neighborhood. DWM said that both potential main breaks could result in temporary water outages for residents and businesses in the area.

Concern switched from the water pooling to the wet road freezing over as the sun went down and temperatures dipped.

"I'm thinking that it may be black ice, and it's kind of dangerous for people coming through," Williams said.
