Emory assistant professor placed on administrative leave after alleged antisemitic comments

Officials said that the university will be doing an internal investigation to determine the fate of the professor.

ATLANTA — An Emory University Schools of Medicine assistant professor has been placed on administrative leave after they allegedly made antisemitic comments on a private social media account.

Officials said that the university will be doing an internal investigation to determine the fate of the professor.

It is unclear the exact comments the assistant professor has made. The comments were made after the recent Hamas attacks in Israel where hundreds were killed and some were even kidnapped.

Israel responded to the attacks with airstrikes and raids to the Gaza Strip. The conflict has only been intensifying as both sides prepare for a full-scale incursion.

The university released a statement condemning the comments.

We are aware of the recent antisemitic comments made on a private social media account by one of our assistant professors. We condemn such comments in the strongest possible terms and have immediately placed this individual on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. As we navigate difficult conversations, our expectation is that all members of the Emory community continue to demonstrate empathy and treat each other with dignity and respect. There is no place in our community for language and behavior based in hatred, that incites violence, and that is counter to the values that unite us as educators and health practitioners.

The Woodruff Health Science Center, a center at Emory University, also released a statement on the matter. Officials with the center said that the assistant professor is also a physician at their facility.

Officials with the center released the following statement below:

Emory condemns such comments rooted in bias and hate and has taken immediate action by putting this individual on administrative leave while an internal investigation takes place.

We expect all members of the Emory community to treat each other with dignity and respect at all times, recognizing that each of us comes from different backgrounds and holds different beliefs. There is no place in our community for language and behavior based in hatred, that incites violence and is counter to the values that unite us as health care professionals and educators.

We all play a critical role in fostering an environment of respect and inclusivity. Let us show empathy, caring and support of each other. Let’s take care of ourselves and each other and, as always, reach out for support as needed.
