Emory reports all clear after police response to Oxford Campus

A police emergency was initially issued at Murdy Hall, a residence hall at the campus outside Covington.

OXFORD, Georgia — UPDATE: Emory University said the Emory Police Department reports an all clear on the Oxford College campus.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office told 11Alive that the initial call "stated an individual entered the dorm with a weapon." 

A spokesperson for Emory University said law enforcement agencies investigated a report of a person with a handgun on campus. The university added it's resuming its normal campus operations. 

"I understand that many at Emory– students, faculty, staff, parents and families–were deeply shaken and concerned by this experience," the spokesperson said in a statement. "I want you to know that the actions of the Emory Police Department were pursued as a cautionary measure. We responded quickly to keep everyone as safe as possible.  Thank you all for your understanding."

Emory University on Friday afternoon reported a police emergency at its Oxford College campus outside Covington.

The school said it was occurring at Murdy Hall and advised students and others to avoid the area. At 3:27 p.m., the school said Emory Police were continuing to investigate the situation. A shelter in place advisement remained in place. At 3:32 p.m., the school said it had "no additional information about the ongoing situation at Oxford."

"Please continue to shelter in place while police investigate," the school said.

Murdy Hall is a residence hall. The Newton County Sheriff's Office told 11Alive that the initial call "stated an individual entered the dorm with a weapon."

There was no further information immediately available from the sheriff's office.

An update from Emory said that police are on scene and a shelter in place advisory has been issued.

"Update: Emory Emergency: There is a police emergency on Oxford College Campus at Murdy Hall. Avoid the area. Updates to follow," Emory initially tweeted.
