ATLANTA — Editor's note: A previous version of the story incorrectly mentioned that the 14th Dalai Lama attended the event. He did not attend the ceremony.

Emory University and Drepung Loseling Monastery celebrated a 25-year milestone of the original Emory-Tibet Partnership.

The agreement was the first-of-its-kind between a western institution and a Tibetan monastic university. The Emory-Tibet partnership was designed to explore science and values to address humanity's problems.

On Monday, Drepung Loseling Monastery and Emory leaders renewed the partnership.

The agreement also pushes the idea of advancing the vision for the education of the heart and mind, according to Emory University officials. In 2017, the partnership evolved into a global center called The Compassion Center. The center uses a research-based method with theoretical programs, according to its website.

Emory added that the ceremony kicked off multiple events with Tibetan leaders throughout the week.
