FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The spring wedding season is around the corner, and 11Alive recently learned about two women in Forsyth County hoping to save the big day for brides in crisis.
The magic all starts in Carol Williams’ home, where hundreds of dresses are kept in her basement.
“We give gowns to brides in need, brides in crisis," said Williams, owner and creator of Fairy Godmother’s Closet.
Williams works to support brides experiencing issues ranging from financial, medical or family hardships – all of which prevent the brides from purchasing the dress of their dreams.
Thanks to the support of bridal shops who donate gowns, many of them sample dresses with tags on, Williams and her partner, Diane Lyon, are able to offer a solution: a free gown.
“I get so many brides that are crying having to choose between the wedding and the dress,” Williams explained.
The two have helped brides from across the metro as well as other states. Williams operates out of her home to prevent incurring overhead costs, which can sometimes be an obstacle to convincing brides she’s not a scam.
“I’m for real,” Williams said. “It’s hard to convince them since I’m not a storefront.”
But Lyon and Williams work to spread the word and reach as many brides as they can.
“Every bride deserves to be beautiful on her wedding day, and I don't think money should have anything to do with that,” Williams added.
The chance to connect a bride with a gown she deserves is an experience that motivates both women.
“It warms my heart,” Lyon shared. “It is something that's so special.”
“Sometimes it brings me to tears,” Williams shared. “It’s special. It’s such a special feeling.”
