'Violated every requirement of the settlement': Judge holds GA prison system in contempt for failure to make reforms

His order says he’ll appoint an independent monitor to get the Jackson unit into compliance.

JACKSON, Georgia — Leaders of Georgia’s prison system have ignored court orders and even falsified records to avoid improving conditions at a Jackson unit, a federal judge says.

Judge Marc Treadwell on Friday ruled that seven prison officials are in contempt of court. They include State Corrections Commissioner Tyrone Oliver.

In 2019, Treadwell wrote, prison officials agreed to settle a lawsuit over conditions at their special management unit in Jackson.

But over the past five years Treadwell wrote they “violated every requirement of the settlement.”

His order Friday says he’ll appoint an independent monitor to get the Jackson unit into compliance.

He’s giving the corrections department six months to honor their 2019 agreement. And he’s fining the prison system $2,500 a day due to its “longstanding and flagrant violations.”
