Fire ignites at church in downtown Buford | What we know

This is a developing story.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Crews have been battling a church fire in downtown Buford since late Thursday night.

Gwinnett County Fire responded to the First Pentecostal Church on 15 E Moreno Street shortly after 10 p.m. after receiving calls about smoke.

Firefighters initially saw smoke coming out of the top of the building, but officials said that as they tried to extinguish it, the fire intensified. At almost midnight, there were almost 40 firefighters working to keep the fire under control so it would be safe enough to re-enter the building.
