2 contractors critically hurt after being electrocuted while working at Midtown Atlanta high-rise, officials say

Here's what we know.

ATLANTA — Two contractors were critically hurt after being electrocuted while working on construction at a Midtown Atlanta high-rise building Saturday afternoon, according to fire officials.

The Atlanta Police Department said officers responded around 3 p.m. to 271 17th Street NW, which is across from the Overtime Elite Arena and near the  Embassy Suites By Hilton Atlanta Midtown. Several law officers are in the building, including the office of Sen. Jon Ossoff.

APD previously said the call came in as a "report of an explosion." 11Alive had a crew at the scene and saw firefighters and officers responding to the area near Atlantic Station.

In an update, Atlanta fire officials said the contractors were working on the 15th floor and received a severe electrical shock.

"The two injured electrical contractors were performing electrical upgrades in the building as part of planned construction activity," Atlanta Fire Rescue said.

Officials said the two people hurt were taken to the Grady Hospital for medical treatment.

One sprinkler was activated on the 15th floor and the scene was left with building engineers and electrical contractors, officials added.

"Our office is grateful to Atlanta Fire and Rescue and all law enforcement who responded today. Senator Ossoff and our team are keeping the injured workers in our prayers," a spokesperson with Sen. Ossoff's Office said.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the electrical fire.
