HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -- The foster parents already indicted in the murder of their foster daughter now face dozens of additional charges.
Jennifer and Joseph Rosenbaum appeared in a Henry County Court Aug. 22 and where they were re-indicted on 39 charges related to the November 2015 death of 2-year-old Laila Marie Daniel.
The Rosenbaums insist Laila choked on a chicken bone, but an autopsy disputed that and revealed the 2-year-old had suffered several injuries, possibly during the time she was in the Rosenbaums' care. The report also states that Laila died primarily because she had suffered a transected pancreas the day of her death.
The couple was originally indicted on four counts, including malice murder, felony murder, child cruelty and aggravated assault. They pleaded not guilty to those charges.
Now, they face the the new wave of charges as they await trial, which has been postponed until March of next year.
Special prosecutors, who said they weren't prepared to try the case yet, had to be appointed to handle it because Jennifer Rosenbaum used to work for the District Attorney's office.
The case drew scrutiny after it revealed failures of Laila's state Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) workers. During the several months, they were supposed to be supervising Laila’s foster care but allegedly did not intervene in time to save her. They were eventually fired.
The Rosenbaums have been out on bond since they were arrested.
