All-clear given after suspicious package forces evacuation at Fulton County Courthouse

Police said the threat is cleared.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police said in a tweet Wednesday morning there was no threat after reports of a suspicious package at the Fulton County Courthouse.

Officers had to evacuate the building and shut down surrounding roads after getting reports of the suspicious package around 9:30 a.m. That's when the department's bomb squad responded and shut down surrounding streets to traffic - including Pryor, Mitchell and Peachtree streets.

"Please be mindful & avoid the area at this time," the tweet said.

Photos from the scene showed police vehicles blocking off streets and what appeared to be groups of people leaving the building.

Atlanta Police Public Affairs Officer Steve Avery told 11Alive the Fulton County Sheriff's Office cleared and evacuated the building. The sheriff's office also set up a perimeter around the building, so that APD's SWAT unit and bomb squad could assist the sheriff's office in checking the package itself, Avery said.

About an hour later, police gave an update that the package had been cleared and police were working to reopen the streets.
