Fulton County commissioner considers dissolving housing authority

A commissioner is facing several allegations, prompting the proposal.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Fulton County’s Board of Commissioners is considering a resolution to dissolve the county’s housing authority after allegations have surfaced against one of its members.

Housing Authority Commissioner Ron Shakir is facing several allegations, including disruptive behavior during HAFC meetings, displaying aggressive and unprofessional conduct and sexual harassment.

Shakir denies all of them.

“What was real troublesome was successful in bringing five or six other commissioners down to call for my removal," Shakir said.

The housing authority has been around since 1972 - but a proposal by Commissioner Marvin Arrington, Jr. could soon end its existence.

Shakir said the whole effort is purely political.

“He is really acting like a bully," Shakir said. "But (he) really should be investigated the allegations that were made. When they put it out there to the public with no proof of fact, then it's just mean-spirited politics.”

Commissioner Khadijah Abdur-Rahman said the proposed resolution doesn’t make sense.

“You would not in 2023 dissolve a Housing Authority especially since it serves seniors, serves disabled, serves the lesser of these," the commissioner said.

Commissioner Dana Barret said there’s a simple solution that doesn’t involve doing away with the housing authority.

“I’m hoping that the person who appointed the commissioner who seems to be causing an issue would just appoint someone else. That would obviously be the easiest solution,” Barret said.
