FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Fulton County Jail inmate is seriously hurt after falling on Saturday night, according to the sheriff's office.
The Fulton County Sheriff's Office said the inmate fell from the stairs in a housing unit and is currently in critical condition. According to the sheriff's office, preliminary findings indicate there is no foul play suspected.
The incident is under investigation, and no other information has been released at this time.
In general, the jail's conditions have been scrutinized as more than two dozen inmates have died either in custody or following medical emergencies at the jail since 2022. The Department of Justice opened a civil investigation into the facility in July 2023.
Following an inmate death earlier this year when Leonard Fortner was stabbed and killed, Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat highlighted the deteriorating conditions at the jail when he said Fornter was stabbed with a piece of metal fashioned into a knife.
"The Fulton County Jail is in crisis and has been in crisis for decades," Labat said. "The conditions have far outlived its life cycle."
