A Gainesville High School baseball player has died, according to the family.

Loved ones posted on social media Tuesday that Jeremy Medina's heart stopped on Monday night, just an hour before his grandmother arrived to visit. Last week, doctors declared him brain dead.

The high school senior was hit in the head with a bat a little more than two weeks ago. He accidentally leaned into the batting cage net during hitting drills at the team's indoor facility on Nov. 20. He played both pitcher and catcher on Gainesville High School's baseball team in 2022.

"We know Jeremy was and will always be in God's hands, and we will see him soon. We are grateful for all the prayers and support over the last three weeks, and we appreciate everyone's understanding as we take time now to be with our family," said the Tuesday Facebook post.

Medina's father previously said it has been Jeremy's dream to become a professional baseball player and a youth minister.

Last week, the surgeon described his exact medical condition as "neurologically dead" before his heart officially stopped. His family said at the news conference that they were deciding to donate his organs.

Services have not been announced for the baseball player yet. The family said they would post updates about honoring him here.
