ATLANTA — Georgia's Capitol building was evacuated on Thursday afternoon due to an email threat, according to a text alert that went out. An all-clear was given shortly after 3:30 p.m. after the threat was found to be unsubstantiated.
11Alive's Doug Richards confirmed the email went to numerous people at the Capitol as part of a hoax that was sent out to multiple other states. The Capitol is now resuming normal operations.
After the threat was sent out, an alert stated: "The Capitol will be closed until further notice due to an email threat. All persons inside should evacuate in an orderly fashion."
The 11Alive SkyTracker flew over the Capitol, where things appeared largely calm.
The Georgia General Assembly is currently not in session, and the building itself is undergoing a refinishing of the Gold Dome.
A spokesman for Gov. Brian Kemp, Garrison Douglas, told 11Alive in an email: "I can confirm that the Capitol has been evacuated. The Governor and First Lady were not in danger at any time of the threat and are in safe location. Further details and updates can be received from Capitol Police."
