Georgia cities with the longest, shortest life expectancies

Want to live longer than the average American? Move to Gainesville, Ga., according to a new report from 24/7 Wall Street.

Gainesville is the city with longest life expectancy in Georgia at 78.8 years. In fact, it's the only metro area in the state with a life expectancy higher than the national average of 78.5 years.

According to the 24/7 Wall Street survey, a typical Georgia resident is expected to live about 76.9 years. 

Columbus, Ga. has the state's shortest life expectancy at 74.4 years -- four years shorter than individuals in Gainesville! Those in Columbus are "among the most likely int eh country to be physically inactive and obese," according to 24/7 Wall Street.

"Georgia is not a particularly healthy state," the survey reports. Only 75.7% of Georgia adults exercise regularly -- just 71.6% in Columbus. The national average is 77% of adults. 

The American city with the shortest life expectancy is Gadsden, Alabama at 72.9 years. The longest life expectancy can be found in the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara region of California at 82.7 years.

24/7 Wall Street used county used county-level life expectancy data for 2010 from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a global health research center affiliated with University of Washington, to determine those with the longest and shortest life expectancy. Click here for more.
