Georgia's Katelyn Abeln prepares for Olympics with heartfelt send-off

Abeln will participate in two events as a part of the USA Shooting team.

ATLANTA — With just 21 days to go until the Olympics in Paris, Georgia is buzzing with pride as one of its own prepares to compete on the world stage.

Katelyn Abeln, a 23-year-old shooting sensation, is gearing up for her events in the air pistol and sport pistol categories. But before she departs, her family and community gave her a grand send-off at the Three Strands Winery in Dallas, Georgia.

The winery was alive with excitement as friends, family and supporters gathered to celebrate Katelyn. Her mother, Joy Abeln, began planning the party back in May.

"We expected maybe 25 people to show up, considering it's the day after a holiday," Joy said. "But we've been overwhelmed with support—about 100 people said they were coming!"

The party is themed to celebrate both Katelyn's journey and the Parisian location of the Olympics. Guests were treated to a charcuterie board filled with French cheeses, including brie, and a large display spelling out "USA" in bold letters.

"I didn’t really expect to make the Olympic team—it’s a surreal feeling for sure," she shared.

While Katelyn will miss the opening ceremony due to her competition schedule, she will have the opportunity to experience the Olympic Village and participate in the closing ceremony.

Her mother plans to carry the overwhelming support from home with her when she joins Katelyn in Paris.

"The support has been incredible," Joy said, visibly moved.
