Georgia law enforcement helicopter crashes in Alabama

Authorities say there is no sign of life

A Georgia law enforcement helicopter has crashed into a power line then into a creek in Chilton County, Alabama, according to authorities.

Montgomery television station WSFA says the crash site is in the area of Cargile Creek, located on Lake Mitchell in Verbena, in Chilton County. That's about 50 miles north of Montgomery and 50 miles south of Birmingham near the center of the state.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Bell OH-58 helicopter crashed around 1:15 p.m. Central Time Friday. It was not immediately known how many people were on board the helicopter.

The Chilton County Sheriff's Office has told Birmingham television station WVTM there are "no signs of life."

WVTM says Chilton County Chief Deputy Shane Mayfield believes right now only the pilot was on board.

The helicopter originated in the Columbus area and is from the Metro Narcotics Task Force, a multi-jurisdictional drug task force.
