SENOIA, Ga. — First responders and Good Samaritans rescued a driver on Wednesday afternoon after his car flipped and ended up submerged under water near the Senoia public library.

Senoia Police officers and Coweta County firefighters responded to the Senoia Branch Library around 12:30 p.m. after they got several calls about a car that had driven off the road into Marimac Lakes off Pylant Road in Coweta County.

First responders got to the scene in two minutes and found several Good Samartians already swimming in the water trying to get the driver out.

Firefighters and police officers jumped into the water and used rescue equipment to help pull the door open and get a 34-year-old man out and pull the vehicle closer to shore.

A witness told Senoia Police that they were following behind the red 2017 Honda CRV for several miles, stating that the man was driving completely normal until all of a sudden the car sped up quickly, hopped a curb, crossed over a large drainage ditch, and went up an embankment before crashing into the lake and flipping his car.

The driver was in critical condition when he was pulled out of the car and was rushed to Piedmont-Newnan Hospital, and his current condition is unknown, according to Coweta County Fire and Rescue officials.

Police said that investigators are looking into the possibilities the driver either had a medical emergency or the car malfunctioned.

Senoia Police Chief Jason Edens said he commends "the heroic actions of all the Good Samaritans that stopped to render aid."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Cpt. Jason Ercole at 770-599-3256 Ext. 107 or email at jercole@senoia.com to help investigators determine what happened.
