Woman shot after pointing gun at deputy during response to domestic disturbance in Gordon County: Sheriff's office

It happened just after midnight Friday morning.

GORDON COUNTY, Ga. — A Gordon County deputy shot a 55-year-old woman early Friday morning after she allegedly pointed a handgun toward the deputy during a response to a domestic disturbance call, the sheriff's office said.

The Gordon County Sheriff's Office said it happened just after midnight on Erwin Hill Church Road near Sonoraville.

A statement on the sheriff's office's Facebook page said deputies had responded to a home following a 911 call over a domestic disturbance. According to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, deputies met with the caller separately before traveling to the home. The GBI said the caller told deputies the woman in the house may have had a gun.

"When they arrived, they were met by a woman brandishing a handgun. As they were attempting to communicate with her, she pointed her weapon at them a number of times and a deputy shot her," the sheriff's office Facebook post said. "She subsequently surrendered."

GBI agents said that the deputies attempted to talk the woman into leaving the home peacefully, but during the incident, a deputy shot her. The GBI said they found a gun in the home, but the agency did not say that the woman pointed the gun at deputies.

The post stated the woman was taken from the scene by ambulance with a "non-fatal wound." There was no additional information on the extent of injuries to the woman.

No deputies were injured in the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation stated it would conduct an independent investigation, as is protocol with shootings involving law enforcement.
