GREENE COUNTY, Ga. — A Greene County firefighter was killed in the line of duty this week, officials confirmed.
The Greene County Board of Commissioners announced that Battalion Chief Chris Eddy died on Wednesday, Sept. 4. He was assigned to Greene County Fire Rescue's Station 11. Gov. Brian Kemp confirmed during a news conference for the Apalachee High School shooting that Eddy died in an explosion. His death was not connected to the shooting.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Battalion Chief Eddy," the Board of Commissioners posted on Facebook.
Greene County Fire Rescue also posted about Eddy's death, asking the community for prayers.
"GCFR has no words right now," the department's post reads. "We are truly in disbelief."
Tributes poured in, with friends and neighbors sharing their memories of Eddy on social media.
"Chris was wonderful, kind words, everything," Jan Hallman said. "Prayers to his dad, Bob, and all family members, colleagues and firefighter family. You will be greatly missed, cousin."
"He was absolutely amazing, and the world was a better place thanks to him," Landen York wrote.
