1 killed, 1 hospitalized in downtown Griffin shooting; both parties knew each other, police say

It happened across from the Spalding County Courthouse.

GRIFFIN, Ga. — One person was killed and another person was hospitalized in a shooting incident in downtown Griffin on Friday in which both parties knew each other, police said.

The Griffin Police Department stressed there was no "active threat to the public" though the call had first come in as an active shooter situation.

The incident happened across from the Spalding County courthouse. A full Griffin Police statement said:

On September 13th, 2024 Griffin Police and Spalding County Deputies were called to the area of 6th and Solomon in reference to an active shooter situation outside the Spalding County Courthouse. Both parties involved were familiar with each other. At this time one of the involved parties has succumbed to their injuries and the other is being treated at Spalding Regional. There is no active threat to the public and this case is being actively investigated by the Griffin Police Department Criminal Investigations Division. Anyone with information or who witnessed the event is asked to contact Inv Powell at rpowell@cityofgriffin.com.

A witness shared a video of the scene with 11Alive's Cody Alcorn, which showed multiple officers and police vehicles around the courthouse, as well as South 6th Street blocked off with police tape.

UPDATE | City of Griffin Police Department has confirmed there was a shooting in Downtown Griffin, across from the Spalding County courthouse. — I just received this video from a friend in downtown Griffin, Georgia after multiple witnesses said there was a shooting near the courthouse. The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office sent out an alert to citizens telling them there was no active shooter and no threat at this time. As you can see in the video, there is a crime scene established. Will update as I get additional information
