Griffin municipal court judge committed suicide, preliminary autopsy reveals

William G. Johnston was found dead in his car earlier this week.

DECATUR, Ga. -- Preliminary results of an autopsy conducted on a city of Griffin municipal judge reveals William G. Johnston committed suicide.

Johnston, 53, was found dead in his car by two emergency workers May 1, just one day after he was last seen alive.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Johnston left his home off Morningside Drive in Griffin around 6:20 pm on Monday, saying that he needed to meet a client in Lamar County.

The next morning, family members contacted police because they hadn't heard from him. Griffin police then began making calls to find him and called for the GBI's help around 5 pm.

A short time later, police they found Johnston's car near Jewel Drive and Pearl Circle with him inside.

The preliminary autopsy reports were released Thursday and revealed Johnston died from a gunshot wound.
