Seniors with limited income get new affordable housing complex in DeKalb County

Solace Grove will feature 125 units open to seniors in DeKalb on land owned by First Baptist Church.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A combination of faith, vision and cooperation have led to a new development that will give senior citizens on a limited income an affordable place to call home in DeKalb County.

“We thank God for allowing this, and we ask, Oh God, that you continue to bless this land," prayed a minister of First Baptist Church.

Developers involved with building the 125-unit Solace Grove building complex in the 2300 block of 2nd Avenue. said the need for this type of project is great within the city.

“Our faith-based community and our churches provide an enormous opportunity wealth of opportunity to help me alleviate the problem we face for affordable housing," said DeKalb County CEO-elect Lorraine Cochran-Johnson.

Seniors aged 60 and older with or below 60% of the area median income are eligible to live in the complex.

“Renters in Atlanta and here in this county are cost-burdened. That means they are paying too much for their housing," said a representative of Enterprise Community Partners.

The housing development is part of an effort by groups, including First Baptist Church, which owns the land.

“We’ll be able to at least provide housing for some of our seniors in DeKalb, and that’s nothing but the work of God," said Pastor Norman Thomas of First Baptist Church.
