Gwinnett County selling old Olympic tennis center site; purchasing group plans $150+ million redevelopment

According to a county release, the sale of the land to Fuqua Acquisitions II, LLC is planned for $5.6 million.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County announced this week it will be selling the old 1996 Olympic tennis center site to a group with plans for a nearly $160 million redevelopment of the site.

The county said in a release its Board of Commissioners had "set in motion the sale" of the Stone Mountain Tennis Center site. The tennis center itself was demolished years ago, and the site has remained undeveloped.

According to a county release, the sale of the land to Fuqua Acquisitions II, LLC is planned for $5.6 million.

"The sale will open the door to the site’s long-anticipated redevelopment," the release said.

It added Fuqua and its development partners "will invest an estimated $158.8 million to redevelop the tennis center site."

"Last October, the land was rezoned for a regional mixed-use development that will encompass wholesale retail, four restaurants and multifamily residential, including 50 dedicated affordable housing units," the release stated. "The project is expected to create 520 permanent retail and dining jobs, and approximately 400 construction jobs will be created during the two-plus years the redevelopment will be in progress."

Fuqua specializes in urban retail mixed-use supercenters, the county said. They've worked on other projects including the retail portion of The Battery in Cobb County.

“I am excited about this development and what it will mean for current and future residents to be able to access shopping, dining, and employment opportunities right in their backyard,” District 2 Commissioner Ben Ku said in a statement. “The addition of greenspace will also complement the proximity to Stone Mountain’s natural resources and make it a welcoming place to gather.”

According to the county, the redevelopment will also include transit enhancements and transportation improvements.
