Man shot by police after firing at officers in Gwinnett County, department says

It all happened around 2 a.m. at a Snellville apartment complex along Country Walk after dispatchers received a call from a woman inside an apartment with a man.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A man remains in the hospital after being shot by police in Gwinnett County on Tuesday morning, according to a police update.

On Thursday morning, the Gwinnett County Police Department said the suspect in the case was "still being  treated at a local hospital for his injuries" and that "following his release, he will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail."

The original incident happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday at a Snellville apartment complex at 2300 Country Walk after dispatchers received a call from a woman inside an apartment with a man. When officers arrived, the man was out of that apartment building and allegedly walking around the parking lot, "seemingly agitated."

Police said the woman who made the 911 call claimed that the man with her was armed and planned to die by suicide. Officers approached him and asked him to remove his right hand from his pocket, but he apparently refused.

Police then spent about 20 minutes trying to de-escalate the situation, making plans for the man to call a family member before he allegedly pulled a gun from his pocket and fired at officers.

That's when two Gwinnett County and one Snellville police officer shot back at the suspect, hitting him multiple times. Officers then rendered aid until an ambulance arrived.

The police department said that its Deadly Force Investigative Team would handle the investigation..

According to the Thursday update, the man faces charges including four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
