DULUTH, Ga. — Gwinnett County is one step closer to transforming the aging Gwinnett Place Mall into a vibrant, modern space as part of the site's redevelopment project.
On Monday, the county's Urban Redevelopment Agency announced it had finalized the $16.5 million purchase of the 23-acre Macy’s department and furniture store properties at the site. This brings the County’s total ownership of the mall property to 76 acres.

The project will transform the mall site into a bustling, mixed-use complex, and the county says it will "bring both catalytic change and new opportunities to Gwinnett residents and businesses."
“We are thrilled to officially secure the Macy’s properties at Gwinnett Place Mall as we continue to make rapid and deliberate forward progress in the site’s redevelopment,” said Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “This purchase is critical for us to attract top development partners in 2025 and together work toward creating a revitalized urban hub for Gwinnett County residents, entrepreneurs and businesses.”
Commissioner Kirkland Carden of District 1 called the purchase “an exciting milestone.”
“Our residents and businesses alike will be positively impacted by this redevelopment for years to come as a result of the new revenues and economic opportunities this project will produce," Carden added.
Gwinnett County has been gathering input from residents and businesses to shape the project, using studies such as the Equitable Redevelopment Plan and the Gwinnett Place Mall Site Revitalization Strategy to help pinpoint the community's needs.
The county is working with CBRE, a global real estate firm, to refine redevelopment plans. In early 2025, officials will release a nationwide request for proposals to find a development partner, a release said.
For now, Macy’s will continue to operate at the site, leasing back the properties through early 2025.
