GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A jail dog searching for a "fur"-ever home following the announced closure of Gwinnett County's Operation Second Chance and Fulton County's Canine Cellmates program has found a home.
According to the program, Tien was adopted on Thursday following an 11Alive report asking for help to find him a new home.
Gwinnett County's Jail Dogs program, including Operation Second Chance and Fulton County's Canine Cellmates, is set to close on Dec. 15.
This closure comes amid an animal overcrowding crisis in Georgia.
Advocates emphasize the positive impact of these programs on inmates, reducing recidivism rates and fostering empathy and responsibility.
The closures raise concerns about the loss of rehabilitative initiatives during a challenging time for jail overcrowding and animal welfare in the state.
Canine Cellmates Founder Susan Jacobs-Meadows said it was a loss for the men and also the animals in Georgia.
"We're also doing this at a time when we are at the worst animal welfare point in 10 years! This is the worst possible time to be shutting down programs like this," she said.
Jacobs-Meadows thinks everyone in the state should be invested in programs that teach prisoners how to have empathy and responsibility for animals.
