Gwinnett County Police to host hiring event in New York City

GCPD will host a hiring event on Aug. 17-18, with a hiring incentive and relocation incentive.
Gwinnett County Police said they received a 911 call from a teenage girl around 10:20 a.m., in which the teen said her stepfather had pulled out a gun.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Gwinnett County Police Department will host a hiring event in New York City next month.

The event will be held at the Hyatt Centric Wall Street Hotel, located at 75 Wall Street, from Aug. 17 to Aug. 18. 

GCPD is offering a $5,100 hiring incentive and a $3,500 relocation incentive to move to Gwinnett County, according to a release. 

Those applying for police officer positions are asked to register and schedule an appointment for this event in advance, and to bring all documents requested. Applicants without an appointment are encouraged to arrive at 8 a.m., as the process can take several hours.

Phase I of the hiring event will consist of orientation, physical agility test, oral interview, psychological exam and initial background check. Conditional Job Offers will be given to applicants who qualify, a release said. 

Phase II of the hiring process will take place at a later time. The application process averages about 90 days for completion, the release said. Those who receive their Final Job Offer will be offered immediate employment, regardless of the start date for the next police academy.

GCPD has an authorized strength of 930 sworn officers and 129 communications officers supported by 167 civilian employees with the responsibility of supplying law enforcement services to approximately 900,000 residents within an area of 436 square miles, the release said. The department has multiple specialized units, including Computer Forensics, K-9, Aviation, Technology Research, Accident Investigations, Training, S.W.A.T., Crime Prevention, Hazardous Devices and more.

GCPD offers all officers a 4% annual raise and a 5% shift differential for night watch uniform patrol officers. Qualifying employees can also receive educational incentives of 3% for a 2-year college degree and a 6% incentive for a 4-year college degree.

To become an officer, applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, be a U.S. citizen and be eligible for P.O.S.T. Certification, must have a valid driver's license and must be at least 21 years old when they graduate from the police academy. During the application process, comprehensive background checks including an applicant's criminal history, driving history and credit reporting will be conducted.
