GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is considering implementing a clear backpack policy for all students as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance school safety. The district said the proposed policy is one of several new measures under consideration to ensure a safer environment for students and staff.

If approved, the policy would provide every student with a durable clear backpack at no cost for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year. Additionally, students would be allowed to carry a small, non-clear pouch for personal items such as phones and hygiene products, with the pouch size limited to 6" x 9".

Students participating in extracurricular activities would also be permitted to use non-clear bags for specific needs.

GCPS reiterated that while this policy is a proactive step, it understands the policy "does not ensure complete security." The district also highlighted similar policies already in place in school districts like Clayton County, Richmond, and Dallas ISD as examples.

Families, students, and staff are invited to share their input through a three-question survey, which will be open until Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024.

We want to hear from GCPS students, families, and staff, as this new policy would directly impact them," a release reads.

If adopted, the policy would likely take effect later this school year.
