GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett Police's SWAT team was finally able to arrest a barricaded gunman after more than 18 hours Monday, according to authorities.
Law enforcement was seen surrounding the area around Gwinnett Pointe Apartments near Norcross before 12:30 p.m. They said the incident started at around 6 a.m. on Dunleaf Arc Way with an unknown caller requesting assistance but providing no further information.
When police initially knocked on the door of the residence, they said they heard no answer but shortly after, they received another call with the same person simply asking for police.
Officers added that as they investigated the situation, they learned a man with a weapon was inside the home. That's when Gwinnett Police's SWAT team was called to the scene.
"When they first came they were running with their guns behind the building," a resident told 11Alive.
Authorities evacuated the building as SWAT arrived.
Police said residents of that building were not able to return home until the incident was resolved.
Once SWAT arrived and began making announcements, police said a 75-year-old man and 33-year-old man came out of the apartment in question. The 75-year-old was unharmed and rescued by SWAT; however, the 33-year-old retreated back inside.
According to police, the man rescued notified the SWAT team that the man inside had access to weapons. Officers added that he fired rounds in their direction throughout the day.
They said they made an arrest shortly after midnight. The man in question is now being charged with reckless conduct, aggravated assault, battery, and false imprisonment.
As of now, the Gwinnett Police Department said its Internal Affairs unit has taken over the case.
