FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A former Atlanta police officer was indicted Friday for murder.
Tahreem Zeus Rana, 23, faces 12 counts in the shooting death of Vernecia Woodard, whose burned body was found in a Hapeville dumping ground in August. The victim had moved to Georgia from New York less than a week before her death.
Rana has been charged with murder, felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, concealing a death, tampering with evidence, violation of oath, pandering and another weapons offense.
Investigators said Rana and Woodard first made contact on Craigslist, then agreed to meet in person. According to the investigation, Rana picked up Woodard, drove her to a dead-end street and shot her twice in the head, possibly with his work-issued gun.
Police questioned Rana after finding Woodard's remains. Rana was arrested by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security while awaiting a flight to Monterrey, Mexico.
