ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has been named the world's busiest airport once again, according to the latest rankings released by Airport Council International.
For over twenty years, the Atlanta airport has held the top position every year except 2020. According to the data, ATL welcomed 104.7 million passengers in 2023, an increase of 11.7 percent from the previous year.
Although the airport is experiencing exponential growth, it is still struggling to reach pre-pandemic levels, falling 5% below the total number of passengers in 2019. The highest passenger volume occurred in 2019, with over 110 million passengers traveling through the airport.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing the airport's significant contribution to the city's economic vitality and global connectivity.
"ATL’s success is Atlanta’s success, and being home to the world’s busiest airport underscores our city’s economic vitality. It is a testament to our global connectivity and an affirmation of our city’s place on the world stage," Mayor Dickens said. "This accolade celebrates not just the Airport’s success but the collective spirit and hard work of every individual who contributes to our city’s lifeblood and my vision of Moving Atlanta Forward.”
Airport General Manager Balram “B” Bheodari credits the accomplishment to the teamwork amongst staff at the airport.
“Our shared vision of One Team and our relentless pursuit of excellence keep us at the pinnacle of global aviation. Every takeoff, every landing, and every passenger served is a chapter in our ongoing story of success and service," Bheodari said.
Among the top five busiest airports are Dubai International, Tokyo International, London Heathrow and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
