COBB COUNTY, Ga. — "Turn around, don't drown." isn't just a catchy phrase - it could be a life-saving reminder for metro Atlanta residents navigating on the roads today following Hurricane Helene.
Earlier this morning, Cobb County Government posted a video to their Facebook page, showing their fire team carrying a woman on their backs out of high floodwaters on Fontaine Road in Mableton, Georgia.
"Cobb Fire has done several rescues like this today. Floodwaters will be an issue throughout the day, even after the rain stops," the post reads.
"Don't chance it, stay put for now," it continued.
While the rain and wind gusts from Hurricane Helene are over, the storm's aftermath of flash flood warnings, road closures and residents without power remains top of mind for Georgians statewide.
Georgia Power's Kim Greene urged everyone to stay off roads as her company and other emergency crews worked to fix problems on the rise.
"We had a storm on Wednesday evening, followed by this horrible and huge Hurricane Helene, which of course has created tremendous damage," Greene told press during the conference.
"As the mayor said, it's really important for us to be able to access the roads and the areas where the outages do occur," she added, referring back to Atlanta's Mayor Andre Dickens urging residents to also stay off roads.
