ATLANTA — One of the law enforcement officers who was injured in a shooting in Henry County almost year ago was hospitalized for surgery this week.
Henry County Deputy Sid Callaway was shot along with Deputy Michael Corley and Locust Grove Police Officer Chase Maddox. Callaway and Corley survived, but Maddox died at the hospital.
Callaway's wife, LuAnn, told 11Alive Friday night that her husband's surgery at Atlanta Medical Hospital was successful. She said surgeons had located the problems incapacitating him as a result of the damage from last year's shooting.
“The doctor just came in and explained that ... because they didn’t have to cut out any damaged intestines, his recovery will be much faster. He will have to start on ice chips, but will eventually progress to clear liquids and beyond," she said in a text Friday night. "I can’t begin to express my deep gratitude for your concern and prayers."
He is back with the same team that saved his life on Feb 9, 2018. That Friday afternoon, authorities were serving a bench warrant to a suspect for failure to appear in Locust Grove municipal court.
Sheriff's deputies said when law enforcement officers got to the home on St. Francis Court, they thought they might have issues getting the suspect into custody, so a Locust Grove officer was called to assist.
Gunfire broke out and all three law enforcement officers, as well as the suspect, were shot. The suspect, 39-year-old Tierre Guthrie, died at the scene.
The fallen officer, Maddox, had been with the department for about five years. He was 26 years old when he was killed.
Callaway's wife is now asking for prayers from the community.
