COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Heritage Elementary School students are being relocated to Banneker High for the day after a small fire in a classroom, officials said.

A spokesperson for Fulton County Schools said all students were safe and out of the building after the classroom fire. The spokesperson added that parents and guardians were being notified of the switch to Banneker, which is about four miles away.

Images from the school parking lot showed students outside, along with both police are fire crews on the scene.

The extent of any damage to the classroom was not initially clear.

In a message to parents and guardians, Heritage Principal Cheryl Parker said:

We are writing to make you aware there was a fire inside one of our classrooms this morning. There are no injuries, and all students are safe and out of the building.

Students will be moved to Banneker High School for the day. Although it is not necessary, if you choose to pick up your child early you may do so at Banneker High School, located at 6015 Feldwood Road, College Park, GA 30349.

Heritage Elementary School staff will be onsite to help coordinate pick-up. Otherwise, students and teachers will have lunch and learning then return home after the normal dismissal time at 2:20 p.m.

Afterschool providers have been notified and all afternoon activities have been canceled.

Again, all students are safe and have been removed from the building.  More information will be provided throughout the day.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
